Zakir Khan – our Parliamentary Candidate

Posted on Wednesday 10 March 2010

We are delighted to announce that on Sunday afternoon, 7th March we selected our Parliamentary candidate, Zakir Khan, at a packed meeting. All six candidates made excellent presentations and answered challenging questions from the audience. Zakir Khan is Head of Community Affairs for Canary Wharf Group and was brought up in Bethnal Green and Bow from the age 7. Zakir says, ‘it is an honour and privilege to be selected as the Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Bethnal Green and Bow. I believe that my grass roots experience has given me a real understanding of community needs and aspirations and I am confident that I can translate this experience into a driving force to win Bethnal Green and Bow from Respect.’

Jeremy Hunt MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport visited our local Conservatives and congratulated Zakir on his candidature and wished him every success.

Jeremy Hunt also spoke about the London 2012 Olympic Games that are approaching fast. He said, ‘we have a wonderful opportunity to showcase these sectors and highlight the best sporting and cultural activities that Britain has to offer, promoting this country as the attractive tourist destination it undoubtedly is. More importantly, we must make sure that the Olympics leave us with a lasting legacy focused on inspiring young people to take part in sport.’
Jeremy Hunt spoke about our National Lottery. When John Major established the National Lottery he started a revolution in the funding of the arts, sport and heritage, and provided these vital sectors with a secure financial footing. But Labour have continually raided Lottery funds for other government projects. Jeremy pledged that the Conservatives would return the Lottery to its original purpose. He stated that our reforms would put an end to any further government interference and ensure a greater share of Lottery funding goes to the arts, sport and heritage, allowing them to prosper and thrive.
